GOLD COAST K9 BASIC PATROL HANDLER COURSE (160 HOURS)

REALITY-BASED DETECTION TRAINING (20 HOURS)


A proper introduction to real world K9 detection searches by introducing a five pronged approach to training and deployments. This 20-hour class serves as an essential phase for the modern police K9 handler in today’s training and deployments. The class includes a 2-hour power point presentation followed with eighteen (18) hours of field training in the following areas:


  1. Masking agents

  2. Food distractors

  3. Animal odors

  4. Open areas

  5. Vehicle

  6. Changing environments



K9 STRESS INOCULATION PRIOR TO DEPLOYMENTS (20 HOURS)


This reality based training class will cover stress and the effects caused by stressful encounters during deployments and how inoculating the K9 to doses of stress through reality based training scenarios will increase the K9’s confidence and effectiveness. Actual deployments, illustrating the importance and the benefits of stress inoculation training, will be examined and discussed during the lecture. The class will include certificate of participation, power point, video and field training.


ELECTRONIC DOG COLLAR TRAINING (20 HOURS)


This 20-hour class serves as an essential phase for the modern police K9 handler in today’s training and deployments. The class includes:

  1. History

  2. Myths

  3. Desensitizing

  4. Sensitivity

  5. Drives

  6. Tying physical & e-collar corrections together

  7. Marking behaviors

  8. Guard and Bark

  9. Searches

  10. Handler aggression

  11. Choreography

  12. Scenarios

  13. Problem solving


This class will cover all aspects of Police Service Dog training utilizing the Electronic Dog Training Collar.


Please Note: K9 team must have an electronic collar prior to class or one can be provided upon request


AGITATOR COURSE (8 HOURS)


This class is recommended for police officers that are interested in being K9 handlers or would like to improve their agitator skills. The purpose of this course is to familiarize participants with different techniques used to read and stimulate police service dogs as well as achieve the desired results from the PSD. In addition to lecture, participants work with police service dogs and/or protection trained dogs.


The course is limited to ten (10) participants and includes:

  1. Agitator safety

  2. Agitators role in successful training

  3. Understanding drives, aggression and prey

  4. Proper understanding and use of a whip and stick

  5. How to properly work a dog during muzzle agitation

  6. Properly utilize bite suit, inner arm, legs and back

  7. Apprehension placement behind doors and in vehicles

  8. Guard and bark

ON-SITE TRAINING


Gold Coast K9 can provide on-site training with staff available to travel to an agency to conduct most of its courses.  On-site training hosted by an agency typically saves significant money from the training budget by eliminating many of those costs normally associated with travel, lodging and per diem.


CUSTOMIZED COURSES


Gold Coast K9 realized every agency does not train the same, nor deploy the same as other agencies. The courses offered by Gold Coast K9 can be customized and modified to the specifications of an agency with respect to its training standards, policies, and deployment procedures.

This 3-day course recertifies the dog and handler in narcotic detection disciplines including:

LASER DIRECTION (8 HOURS)


A laser pointer is an excellent tool for directing your canine. This one day course will cover the different

types of lasers available, when/how they should be used and operational limitations. This training is

excellent for Explosive Detection, Search and Rescue and all Police Service Dog Teams.



HARD SURFACE TRACKING BASIC TO INTERMEDIATE (40 HOURS)


This class will cover basic to intermediate tracking and the practical aspects to urban tracking for suspects. This profile will open up more opportunities for suspect apprehensions and supplement your current deployment capabilities. Though this is not an advanced or tactical tracking class we will touch on those topics throughout the week. This is a great opportunity to get a team started on a very effective use of the police service dog and into urban tracking which is quickly becoming more popular in law enforcement as officers are exposed to its successes.
